Mental health legislation and policy: Role in surviving the COVID—19 pandemic (Grace Alioke)

coronavirus pandemic is moving swiftly like wildfire in a field of dried plants, and not only
devouring contracted ones, but also causing fear, stress, anxiety, highblood pressure, and other
mental imbalances for the non-contracted.

Chime Asonye and HauwaOjeifo, contributors of CNBC Africa, reported that the Government-
mandated social distancing and the implementation of other public health guidelines have led to emotional anguish and psychological challenges amongst restrictions on public life, economic
hardship, and illnesses. They also commented that rather than mental health being at the
periphery, the responses of governments to this novel virus has brought the virus to the front
and center stage.
The mental and physical health of medical workers is at risk daily. This is because they
encounter the infected patients, though they implement the safety rules, this has not stopped
some from contractingthe virus and dying. Many endure long hours of work, extreme isolation
even from their loved ones, and in someunderdeveloped countries, medical workers endure residents’ abuses and insufficient medical facilities.

However, the tragedy of mental challenges will reduce, if legislation and policies about mental
health are enacted and implemented. Itwillhelp the non-contracted survive the pandemic and
preserve a better post-pandemic society.
At a press briefing held on the 26th of March, the regional director of WHO for Europe, Dr.Hans
Kluge, remarked that people should check on their loved ones by calling or video chatting. This
will ensure and promote mental wellness.
People should beat healthy diets, do home exercises, and watch movies and comedies. Doing
these would shift their attention from the pandemic imbalances, to the
good, which produces laughter. It has been medically proved that laughter decreases stress
hormones, increases immune cells, anditisaninfection-fighting antibody, thus improves
people’s resistance to diseases.
Governments should imitate Brazilinhiding the number of deaths and those tested positive of
the virus. Since they are trying to reduced eaths, enacting this would reduce the number of
people suffering from anxiety, high blood pressure, and suicide. It would also save people from
worrying which leads to high blood pressure that can lead to death or other chronic mental conditions.
Legal online businesses should be provided. This will engage the elderly and youths, who are
vulnerable to the virus and fright. It will not only give them a sense of achievement, which
causes joy and improves healths, but also serve as a source of income that will solve financial problems and in turn boost country’s economy.
The response and fight against COVID-19should not neglect the mental healths of others. KThe
United Nations should raise an alarm to the international community to promote mental healths,
