Many young people have misconceptions about mental illnesses hence stigmatize the topic and with the increasingly high rate of mental health issues including suicide and depression, there are lesser systems that addresses mental health.
For example, in our needs assessment in the rural community, many teenagers assumed being a carpenter is a cause of mental health conditions. A deeper insight by our team showed a history of a carpenter with a mental health condition in that community. Hence, they assumed the profession was directly related to a mental health condition.
Our issue therefore addresses the lack of information and awareness towards mental health and mental health related issues hence our project seeks to provide information and training on mental health and its first aid. The effect is that people are more aware of their mental health understands self-help guidelines and a community where mental health is not stigmatized.
We organized a community-based project training 30 teenagers from ages 13-19 on mental health first aid. The training aimed to provide ample information on general mental health, how to help someone in mental distress before it gets worse and self- help guidelines. 20+ hours was spent educating the participants.

PROJECT PHOENIX (ONGOING)
For the past 2 months, we have been working to develop a first of its kind digital platform in Sub-Saharan Africa whose goal is to increase awareness and understanding of mental health while creating a link for mental health treatment and services in this pandemic period.
Our solution encompasses a story-telling platform that leverages the power of thousands of individual voices for advocacy and education by creating an open platform for people living with MH conditions to share their own self-created stories and experiences including challenges they have faced (bullying, stigma etc), the world they envision and even possible solutions to the problems. Not only would this be possible but anybody can also share how the pandemic has affected them and how they have been coping. All in their own words !!.
The recent lockdown and curfews due to the pandemic- COVID19 cannot allow people to access mental health services and treatments directly especially now that there is an urgent need. It is therefore necessary to provide an alternative of accessing healthcare that links people to professional help such as the Internet. Our innovation also creates an online platform where people have access to mental health professionals listed on our platform for free. They would be able to talk to mental health professionals on our platform via a ‘chat’ system or video depending on the users’ choice as these professionals would be volunteers and working with us.
This project will create a more empathetic and inclusive world; one without bullying or stigma and one where everyone can access to mental health services at the comfort of their homes.
